The Location

Located in the very north of Malta, Mellieha is a popular seaside district with plenty to offer those seeking luxury real estate.

Mellieha is reached through the centre of the island, or via the newly-unveiled Coast Road, which connects it to the Bugibba area and, further along, St Julian’s. This makes it convenient to get to from all over the island, and it is only a short 30-40 minute drive here from Valletta or the airport.

Mellieha has been designated a European Destination of Excellence thanks to the high standards of its surroundings – including the beaches and countryside settings – which are some of the most picturesque anywhere on the island. It is also an excellent choice for those eager to pop over to Gozo on occasion, as the ferry terminal is just a further five-minute drive to the north.

The Lifestyle

Although a haven for tourists and expats, Mellieha is quite off Malta’s beaten track and a joy to discover. It is very busy during the hottest summer months of June to September, but remarkably tranquil for the rest of the year.

Life here revolves around the sea and the countryside. Many of the island’s best beaches are found just a short drive away, including Malta’s largest sandy beach Mellieha (or Ghadira) Bay. This makes it very popular with families keen to live a typical Mediterranean lifestyle, enjoying swimming by day and BBQs or picnics by night. There are even a number of lesser-known beaches nearby, including Little Armier and Selmun Bay, so there are plenty of options if you want to avoid the crowds.

The area is also home to some of Malta’s largest and most beautiful expanses of countryside, so it is ideal for those with a love of the outdoors. The rugged coastline makes it perfect for long walks, trekking, abseiling and climbing, and the views are absolutely beautiful too.

However it isn’t just the natural world that makes Mellieha so alluring. The town also home to many of the best restaurants in the country, including Bouquet Garni, Guiseppi’s and Rebekah’s, as well as boutiques, cafés and bars. This delightful mix is the perfect blend of Mediterranean traditions and cosmopolitan pleasures.

The Properties

Mellieha provides a choice of properties that is actually quite hard to find elsewhere.

Most popular are the upmarket villas in the Santa Maria Estate area. This is considered to be one of the most luxurious parts of Malta, and it is typified by large villas with private pools, large gardens and views out to sea. This estate is well-liked by families and professionals, and there is a large expat community nearby.

Of course, as a seaside resort, Mellieha has many other choices for those interested in real estate investments. The village curves down a coast towards the Ghadira Bay area and, here, you’ll find a number of sea-view apartments, including those in the special designated area (SDA) of Tas-Sellum. Although a full range of apartments exists in Mellieha to suit all budgets, most are finished to very high standards, with spacious interiors and, often, large terraces or use of the communal roof. These apartments are also very convenient for those who enjoy heading down to the beach – as it’s only a few minutes walk away!

That said, there are other options too. In the centre of this quite-traditional village, you will find pretty townhouses designed in much the same way as the townhouses found all over the island, with Maltese balconies and small gardens. County-view apartments, as opposed to sea-view ones, are also available.
